our story

calendar      we do parties!

Recess all started with the comment, "there needs to be a place where you can get a cup of coffee and let your kid run around."
Recess centers around a developmentally-rich play & learning environment for kids. It is set up so that parents have the opportunity to join in, connect with one another, relax, take advantage of wellness services, or take a class.

We strive to foster community, wellness and creativity through partnerships with local professionals, practitioners & educators. Recess encourages green practices, reuse and repurposing. We promote the sharing of ideas, skills, and resources through art, craft, music, education, and play.

who “we” are

Lisa Nowell has been in the field of education and learning differences for many years. She established and managed two internationally renowned learning centers in the Bay Area, and continues to work in the field with Parents Education Network, a non-profit organization, to develop programming and deliver information about learning disabilities to parents & educators.

Kristin Jamieson is a former neuroscience researcher, a mother of 1, and has over 7 years of experience in the field of Physical Therapy. She sees benefits in combining pilates-based training with traditional physical therapy based rehab. Kristin's treatment approach combines many techniques such as myofascial release, trigger point, acupressure, deep tissue, strain counter strain, and gentle energy work. Kristin continues to see clients for Physical Therapy, Pilates and Bodywork at Recess.
how recess came to be
The two first met when Lisa came to see Kristin for Physical Therapy. During treatment sessions, they got to talking about education, kids and play. It became clear that both of these ladies value the benefits of play--both for kids and adults. They also agreed that opportunities to engage in indoor play was lacking in San Francisco. In early 2007, they set their minds to do something about this shortage of places to just relax, laugh, explore and play.

Through this shared vision, the brainstorming began on how they could create a unique space for kids and their families to hang out, experiment, learn, and run around. As this vision has become a reality, the ideas for services, components and play have been never ending.

Lisa and Kristin are really excited to create a shared vision that capitalizes on each of their areas of expertise as they build what is now Recess. The ultimate hope is that Recess will be a place that fosters a sense of community and becomes a home away from home for San Francisco families.

We look forward to sharing recess with you. If you would like further information, please don't hesitate to contact us at lisa@recessurbanrecreation.com or kristin@recessurbanrecreation.com.
